Accu-Chek Mobile

I got some information about these new meters in the post recently and liked the idea of strip free testing.

They cost over 50 on the high street,at least they did when I lasted checked, and they are also available on prescription.

I had to go to the diabetic clinic recently so I asked about them. I was lucky that they had some available so they let me have one.

Instead of the usual test strips, they have a cassette which needs replacing after 50 tests and the finger pricker comes attached to the side of the meter.

They're great if you are on the move and it's supposed to be less painful(I'm holding them to that.

I've tried it a few times. You can't beat it for convenience.

Just one thing though, I tried it last night and I got an unexpectedly high glucose of 12.5 but then tested using the Accu-chek Active which came in at 2 mmol lower. Not sure what went wrong there, all of my other readings have matched.

New study into diabetic complications

What do some diabetics develop complications while others do not? That is what a new Swedish study called PROLONG is aiming to find out.

Valeriya Lyssenko is from Lund University Diabetes Centre and will carry out the research along with her colleague Peter Nilsson.

In a press release, which was made available on the Alpha Galileo website, Valeriya Lyssenko said:

“The majority of diabetics will over time develop severe or fatal complications, but 10–15 per cent never do. They are the ones we are interested in in the PROLONG study."

I won't dwell on the possible complications of diabetes as most people will already be well aware of those.

A pilot study has begun and will concentrate on patients who have had diabetes for 30 years. According to the information in the press release, people who have had diabetes for that long and have not developed complications by then are less likely to in later life.

Insulin pill for Type 1 Diabetics?

That is a possibility according to a press release that I've received.

The major issue when it comes to oral pills for type 1 diabetes is that the stomach acids and enzymes will just break them down but now scientists are developing a coating which could prevent this from happening.

According to the press release "Several insulin pills are now in various stages of clinical trials, and proof of concept may allow them to move into more rigorous clinical testing. Novo Nordisk is in the process of testing its final product, which is a closely guarded secret."

Whether these pills will come to the market and just how long that might take are questions that don't yet have answers but one thing is certain, if they want volunteers for trails, I'll give it a try.
